History of Triptych

The triptych comes from early religious art and was a popular alter painting from the middle ages to tell the stories of the bible. As most of the money at the time was in churches and the decoration of it, a triptych could be packed up and put some where safe and portable to different churches as well.

Just one example of many form http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hi/hi_rechtr.htm
